1Why Gaya is the holiest Pind Daan site

According to Hindu tradition, Lord Rama himself performed Pind Daan at Gaya for his father King Dasharatha. The Vishnupad Temple (pin code 823001) enshrines a 40-cm footprint of Lord Vishnu in basalt stone — the central point around which the rite is performed.

The Falgu River, which flows through Gaya, is sacred in Hindu scripture. Per the legend in the Ramayana, the river agreed to flow underground so that Sita's pind offering would not be washed away — which is why the Falgu flows mostly beneath the sand today, surfacing visibly only at certain points near the Vishnupad complex.

The Akshayavat — the undecaying banyan tree inside the Vishnupad complex — is where the Pind Daan rite is concluded. A final pind is offered here, believed to grant the ancestors eternal moksha.

2The four-step Pind Daan circuit

1. Sankalp at Vishnupad Temple — The day begins with the Sankalp, a vow offering, performed by the family's Gayawal panda at the Vishnupad Temple. The pilgrim states their lineage (gotra), the names of the ancestors being honoured, and the intent of the rite.

2. Pind offerings on the Falgu banks — The family proceeds to the Falgu River banks where the Gayawal performs the pind offerings. The pind itself is typically a ball of cooked rice mixed with sesame seeds, barley, and ghee.

3. Darshan at Akshayavat — The circuit concludes at the Akshayavat banyan inside the Vishnupad complex, where a final pind is offered. The Akshayavat symbolises indestructibility — granting the ancestors eternal salvation.

4. Optional Pretshila and Ramshila circuit — Many families extend the rite to Pretshila hill (about 4 km from Gaya) and Ramshila hill, where additional pind offerings are made. This extension turns a one-day circuit into a two-day pilgrimage.

3Coordinating with a Gayawal panda

The Pind Daan rite is conducted by hereditary Gayawal pandas — families who have held the right to perform Shraddha rites at Gaya for centuries. Each Hindu family is traditionally affiliated with a specific Gayawal lineage, recorded in their bahis (registers).
