1The Mahabodhi Temple — UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodhgaya was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The temple's towering shikhara (55 metres) marks the spot where Buddha attained enlightenment. The temple is open daily from approximately 05:00 to 21:00.

The most meditative hours are at sunrise (around 05:00) and around sunset. International visitors pay a modest entry fee; Indian pilgrims enter free. A separate fee applies for camera use inside the sanctum.

2Maya Sarovar and the sacred tank

Maya Sarovar is the sacred tank within the Mahabodhi complex, used for ritual ablutions by pilgrims before entering the temple. The tank is named after Queen Maya, the mother of Buddha.

A circumambulation (pradakshina) of the full Mahabodhi complex — including the temple, Bodhi Tree, Maya Sarovar, and the seven sacred spots (Saptaparni) where Buddha spent seven weeks after enlightenment — takes about 90 minutes at a meditative pace.

3The Do Muhan Road monastery loop

Do Muhan Road in Bodhgaya (pin code 824231, extending into 824233) is the corridor connecting the international monasteries built by Buddhist nations. Each monastery reflects its country's architecture and liturgy:

• Thai Monastery — built by the Royal Thai government, with a golden Buddha and Thai-style roof.

• Indosan Nipponji (Japanese) — features a Japanese-style temple and translating activities of Japanese pilgrim groups.

• Tibetan monastery (Karma Temple) — colourful murals, prayer wheels, and Tibetan-language services.

• Bhutanese monastery — traditional Dzong architecture.

• Vietnamese temple — newer, with Vietnamese-language liturgy.

4Dungeshwari Caves and the Niranjana

About 22 km from Bodhgaya (45 minutes by car) are the Dungeshwari caves — also called the Mahakala caves. This is where Buddha spent six years in extreme asceticism before realising that the middle path, not self-denial, led to enlightenment.

After leaving the caves, Buddha walked to the banks of the Niranjana (the Falgu) where he accepted a bowl of kheer from the village girl Sujata — his first nourishment after six years of fasting. He then walked to Bodhgaya and sat beneath the Bodhi Tree.

5Practical logistics for international pilgrims
